Liverpool pay ten times too much for Joe Allen after mistaking him for an English player

Liverpool have paid their first wildly over-the-odds sum under Brendan Rodgers after signing Swansea midfielder Joe Allen for a fee which made everyone else cry with laughter.

One influencing factor could be the Olympics error which saw Allen listed as English in a match day programme, thereby automatically multiplying his perceived value.

Rodgers told reporters, “I’m excited to have completed my first ludicrous Liverpool signing of an overpriced British player.

“But I can assure supporters there are many more to come.”

Swansea waived the blocking clause in Rodgers’ contract after deciding that he was willing to pay far too much for Allen.
