Liverpool negotiating with Newcastle to take Andy Carroll on permanent basis

Liverpool have refused Newcastle’s offer to take Andy Carroll on loan this season in the hope they can persuade them to take him off their hands permanently.

Newcastle agreed to put up with him until next summer, but are unsure as to whether they want to commit to being lumped with him for the next four to five seasons.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew said, “We thought for one year we could tell him to shoot at our goal so that he’d be our best defender.

“But if we keep him longer his accuracy could improve and that could cause our goalkeeper some problems.

“Not many considering his current form, but it’s a risk we don’t want to take.

“Not for a player like Andy, anyway.”

Newcastle seem unwilling to improve their offer, but Liverpool are determined to get rid of Carroll for the foreseeable future, even if they have to pay another club to take him.

New manager Brendan Rodgers admitted, “I’d be lying if I said that I wanted Andy within 100 miles of any team I’m in charge of.

“We’ve got plenty of time to work out a deal and we’re prepared to up our offer to whatever it takes, frankly.

“We’d happily pay Newcastle £35 million all over again if it meant them taking Andy permanently.”
