Stirrer, not shaken

Chelsea are seeking to avoid controversy in Saturday’s FA Cup tie against QPR by ensuring their captain John Terry will shake hands with Joey Barton, even if no-one else does.

Barton has been at the heart of another media furore recently after the departure of Neil Warnock, and players such as Terry are rumoured to be disgusted by his behaviour.

A Chelsea statement read, “This club condemns footballers who tarnish the image of the game – such as Barton – and John Terry epitomises the qualities that we hold most dear.

“Despite his abhorrence at Barton’s recent conduct, we’ve told John that he must shake his hand before the match on Saturday.

“He doesn’t need to make a bigger fool of himself than he already has, to be honest.”
