Andy Murray left stranded like Concordia

Treading water

Andy Murray once again is experiencing a familiar sinking feeling as his fellow Brits left him high and dry, all alone in the second round of the Australian Open.

The five other British players crashed out on Monday morning before many viewers had even woken up, leaving the Scot to struggle to victory with a grinding motion not unlike a luxury cruise liner against Tuscan rocks.

“I’m sure everyone back home is loving this,” Murray grumbled after his match.

“The other five have already sunk without trace, and now they can wait with glee for my tournament to capsize spectacularly.

“Many are impatient for that moment I know, but some are already slagging me off no end.

“Because they’re ******* English.”
