Wenger claims he did not see Mertesacker play before buying him

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, typically distraught after seeing his side crumble to a 2-3 defeat at Swansea, has shrugged off questions about a major decision which influenced the result – that being his own decision to sign centre-back Per Mertesacker.

As usual Wenger was hawk-eyed when it came to what he perceived to be a soft penalty awarded against his team, yet claimed to be blind as to the German defender’s career before joining the Gunners.

Wenger caught short-sighted again

“I clearly saw a penalty given against us that wasn’t and the referee set up the winning Swansea goal,” Wenger insisted.

“The performance was further hampered by me not having seen any footage of Mertesacker, Yossi Benayoun and others play before they joined us because I was taken up crying about previous losses.

“We’ve got United soon so I might as well stand on the touchline with a blindfold on for that one.”

I love jokes about Wenger’s eyesight. Endless amounts of material!

If there was an end in sight to these jokes he wouldn’t be able to see it anyway.
