The jury contemplating the fate of the Pakistani cricketers accused of match-fixing has not yet received instructions from its gambling overlords on which verdict to dish out and went into the pavilion at the close of play without causing a massive payout.

It is thought the individuals deciding what to do with Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt will be notified of the exact moment and time of their verdict overnight, allowing those in the know to place their bets tomorrow before it is actually read out.

Besieged Pakistan captain Butt defended himself by saying, “I’m delighted to have reached stumps on the first day unbeaten.

“Even more positively, I’ve got a great tip for punters: my mate in the jury is 4/1 to vote ‘not guilty’, and let’s just say that I think it’s worth a flutter!

“With 12 men the subject of considerable interest and pressure from gamblers around the world, I think it’s fair to say there’s more than a few dodgy balls knocking around in here and all.”
