Everyone wanting to deny France any credit whatsoever

Widespread relief at New Zealand scraping past France to win the rugby World Cup 8-7 was particularly noteworthy for the lack of positive language used to describe the losers’ efforts, despite them being on the front foot for most of the match.

Subjected to much criticism after the performance and nature of the victory against Wales, especially for a debateable refereeing decision that they had no control over, it was always going to take something miraculous for many ‘neutrals’ to feel inclined to support them.

Ross Davies from Pembrokeshire gave his reaction, “I don’t care how well they played. As long as New Zealand won, that’s all I’m interested in.”

Similarly, Englishman Chris Ramsay told us, “France deserved to win? What’s wrong with you!

“The whole All Black squad would have to insult my mother – severely – before I’d feel any sympathy for the French.”
