Welsh seething as referee blows for full-time after 80 minutes

Welsh rugby is furious with the officials again following their third-place play-off defeat by Australia after the referee controversially ended the game when 80 minutes were up.

The referee followed the rule book but Wales argued that finishing the match whilst they were losing wasn’t in the spirit of the modern game.

“We’re gutted with the referee,” captain Gethin Jenkins raged.

“The boys were second-best today but there was no malicious intent, so we feel he should have let us off.

“Australia won but we will claim to be ‘people’s champions’, and that’s what counts. To us.”

The staff were equally incensed, although they did acknowledge that they were relieved at not being the English squad.

“I think the referee spoilt the match today, but at least we’re not England,” coach Warren Gatland ranted.

“I just feel that by blowing for full-time, he took our destiny out of our own hands.

“The boys have been treated harshly and now we have to wait for another four whole years to have more reasons to be able to rant at a World Cup.”
